REF: 2437

19th-century Victorian English landscape with a thatched cottage, and a figure at sunset

A very fine and large example of O.T. Clark's work. Born in Hoxton, New Town (just north of London, England) December 21, 1850. His father was a painter as were two of his older brothers. At age 24 he married his wife Ellen (December 1874.) The 1881 census report describes him as a painter living in Islington, not far from Hoxton. Mr Clark and his wife had 13 children. His youngest son Stanley (born in 1887) also worked as an artist. Octavius T Clark lived in or around East London between 1887 to the time of his death in 1921, Romford in Essex.

He would be described as a journeyman artist who went from town to town paintings rural cottage and village life scenes.

The sky and the light reflected in the water in this piece show his skill and accomplishment as a painter.
