Sold

A wonderful late 19th century French forest landscape. The style of the painting is influenced by the work of Narcisse Virgilio Diaz de la Pena, a well known Barbizon painter.
The Barbizon school of artists were part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which rose around the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The Barbizon movement was active from 1840 to 1870 and it takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France which is near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Some of the most prominent features of the school are its tonal qualities, color , loose brushwork and softness of form.
This small painting has all of these qualities. The artists use of impasto ( thick paint ) gives this piece a wonderful atmospheric quality.

The piece is an oil on panel and is in perfect condition.

It has been framed in a new English hand made gold leaf frame
