19th century English warship off the Italian, Mediterranean coast, with village

REF: 2435

Outstanding 19th century English warship off the Italian, Mediterranean coast, with village, mountains and hills.

A very interesting and somewhat unique oil on slate depicting an English ship at anchor in what looks like an Italian or Mediterranean coastline.

The piece has influences from John Thomas Serres the famous English marine painter.

On the right-hand side, there is a dark mark which is obviously a finger or thumbprint from the artist. So it looks like the painter licked up the piece whilst the paint was still wet and left his fingerprint in the paint..which is a nice bit of unique history.

The painting is in good condition, having been recently cleaned and re-varnished. It is framed in a new handmade Englosh gold leaf frame.
