18th century oil painting English portrait of a gent in armor, wearing a wig

REF: 2340

Painter

Outstanding early 18th century English portrait of James Bellevue.

The portrait was always believed to be the work of Sir Godfrey Kneller who was known to have painted James Bellevue for his house in London.

This piece was sold through Christie's on July 13th, 1931. Previously it was in the collection of the world-famous Spencer Churchill family.

The painting ended up in a collection of paintings from the Spencer -Churchill sale in America where we were lucky to purchase them.

This painting was in good order and we had it cleaned and found an appropriate hand-carved 18th century English oval frame to frame the piece.

See the interesting paper inscription on the reverse.
